Tū Tangata Whenua - Masterclass for Active Citizenship

AboutMasterclassIcon.pngOur Masterclass for Active Citizenship – Tū Tangata Whenua – has been designed to bring a diverse group of local people together to awaken their involvement in civic life, or in hapū and iwi affairs, and to strengthen their skills and abilities to make things better in our communities.

Our four-month Masterclass learning journey is based in New Plymouth and is run in partnership with Community Taranaki.

Here's what our participants have said about their experience of the Masterclass.

These Masterclasses are by invitation-only, and are funded by previous participants of these courses and the sponsorship of Community Taranaki and Tu Tama Wahine o Taranaki.

A Guide to Our Masterclass for Active Citizenship is now available on our website. The four-month Masterclass called How Communities Awaken – Tū Tangata Whenua – has been running in Taranaki over the last eight years, and more than 300 people from throughout our province have participated in this unique community development initiative. The Masterclass continues to have a significant impact on civic engagement, on race relations, and on our wider strategies for community and adult education.

We have published this Guide to the thinking, skills and processes behind the Masterclass so that the key ideas behind the Masterclass can be shared with other communities around New Zealand. This publication has been supported by the Department of Internal Affairs, Community Taranaki and Tū Tama Wahine o Taranaki.
